Tokyo, August 26 1998. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation placed three new
models on the Japanese market today. New-look GALANT and LEGNUM models
become more competitive as a result of: Detail design changes to the
front and rear; a 2.4-liter GDI engine for the fast-selling Viento model;
and, the GDI ECO fuel economy indicator as standard equipment on all
GDI-powered models. The all-new 2.4-liter models go on sale today at
Galant and Car Plaza dealerships nationwide in Japan.
Mitsubishi Motors today also added the new 1.8-liter
GDI-powered ASPIRE series, a sister model to the GALANT, to the Car
Plaza lineup.
In addition, Mitsubishi Motors is offering low-emission
versions of 1.8-liter GDI-powered GALANT, LEGNUM and ASPIRE models,
which cut carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides
of nitrogen (NOx) emissions to under 20% of current regulated levels.

Principal Product Features
I. GALANT
- New-look exterior and interior
- Redesigned bumper, radiator grille, and hood at the front, and
light units and garnish at the rear enhance the new GALANT's sporty
exterior in keeping with the series' "high-density sports sedan"
concept.
- On GALANT Viento and VR-4 trim levels, a new muscular front
bumper with integral fog and cornering lamps, and stylish aero-grille
and side airdam give further accent to their sporty looks.
- The GALANT VR-4 type-S trim level gets specialty treatment with
225 / 50R16 tires on new-design 16-inch alloy road wheels, together
with flared wheel arches to accommodate the wide-tread tires.
- On GALANT VE, VR-G and Exceed trim levels, the interior two-tone
color scheme has been changed from a dark-light gray to a black-medium
gray coordination. All models get new seat upholstery, adding
to their sporty and classy nature.
- 2.4-liter GDI engine for fast-selling GALANT Viento
- GALANT Viento's sporty looks are enhanced by a muscular front
bumper, large side airdam, 15-inch alloy road wheels and leather-trimmed
steering wheel. The 1.8-liter GDI engine model is now joined by
the 24 Viento, which is powered by a 2.4-liter GDI engine mated
to Mitsubishi's INVECS-II Sports Mode 5-speed automatic transmission
to realize higher power output with low fuel consumption.
- VR-4 more competitive
- All GALANT VR-4 models, automatic transmission versions included,
now pump out 280 hp. The VR-4 type-S is joined by the new type-V
trim level, which is priced very attractively.
- GDI ECO indicator standard
- All GDI-powered GALANT models come with Mitsubishi's GDI ECO
fuel economy indicator which, located in the instrument panel,
comes on when the vehicle is running at maximum fuel efficiency
to show the driver he is operating his vehicle economically.
II. LEGNUM
- New-look exterior and interior
- Redesigned bumper, radiator grille, and hood at the front, and
light units and garnish at the rear enhance LEGNUM's sporty appearance
in keeping with the series' "prestige sports wagon" concept.
- On LEGNUM Viento and VR-4 trim levels, a new-design muscular
front bumper with integral fog and cornering lamps, and a stylish
aero-grille and side airdam add to their sporty looks.
- The LEGNUM VR-4 type-S trim level gets specialty treatment with
225 / 50R16 tires on new-design 16-inch alloy road wheels, and
flared wheel arches to accommodate the wide-tread tires.
- On ST and 24ST trim levels, the interior two-tone color scheme
has been changed from a dark-light gray to a black-medium gray
coordination.
- 2.4-liter GDI engine for fast-selling Viento
- A new LEGNUM 24 Viento, powered by Mitsubishi's 2.4-liter GDI
engine, joins the 1.8-liter GDI model.
- The 24 Viento type-x trim version is loaded with such sought-after
features as self-leveling suspension, the Mitsubishi Multi-Communication
System (MMCS), high-contrast instrumentation, and wood-trim shift
and handbrake levers.
- VR-4 more competitive
- All LEGNUM VR-4 versions, automatic transmission models included,
now pump out 280 PS. The VR-4 type-S is joined by the new competitively
priced type-V trim level.
- GDI ECO indicator standard
- All LEGNUM models come with Mitsubishi's GDI ECO fuel economy
indicator light, located in the instrument panel, which comes
on when the vehicle is running at maximum fuel efficiency to show
the driver he is operating his vehicle economically.
III. New ASPIRE series
- All models powered by 1.8-liter GDI engine
- All ASPIRE models are powered by Mitsubishi's 1.8-liter GDI
engine, mated to the Sports Mode 4-speed automatic transmission.
- ASPIRE is available in two main trim levels. The VR-G comes
with full automatic air conditioning, in-car entertainment system
and multi-mode keyless entry system as standard. The Viento, meanwhile,
comes with sporty exterior and interior trim that includes a muscular
front bumper, stylish side airdam and rear spoiler, 15-inch alloy
road wheels, and leather-trim steering wheel as standard. VR-G
is available in a low-emission version, and the Viento comes with
MMCS as standard.
- Classy exterior and interior
- ASPIRE's classy exterior and interior looks closely resemble
those of the GALANT. The new model is distinguished from the GALANT
by its brilliant-finish headlight bezels, and the amber-color
turn indicator lens in the rear light unit.
- GDI ECO indicator standard
- All GDI-powered ASPIRE models come with Mitsubishi's GDI ECO
fuel economy indicator light.
IV. Low-emission models
- Some 1.8-liter GDI engine GALANT, LEGNUM and ASPIRE models are
available with a low-emission specification that cuts carbon monoxide,
unburned hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen emissions in the exhaust
to under 20% of current regulated levels.
