MI-PILOT¹ driver-assistance system takes the stress out of long-distance driving on motorways and repeated stop-and-go traffic to keep drivers more comfortable and relaxed on long drives.

From early on, MITSUBISHI MOTORS began the development of driver assistance technologies that take burden off the driver and compensate for driver mistakes. We are also the first to commercialize some of the driver assistance technologies such as adaptive cruise control in the 1990s, which uses laser radar to control the distance from the vehicle ahead, and is a mainstream technology in cars today.
In addition to developing driver assistance technologies that utilize radar and cameras, we have employed our core all-wheel control technology to improve vehicle stability and deliver an optimal driving experience. We aim at reducing burden on the driver in all types of driving conditions. This unending pursuit of a safe, comfortable driving experience is the very essence of MITSUBISHI MOTORS.

One of the efforts we made is MI-PILOT driver-assistance system. Using cameras and radar, MI-PILOT controls acceleration, brakes and steering to reduce the stress of long-distance driving on motorways and in stop-and-go traffic for a safe and enjoyable drive.

What is MI-PILOT?

Assists with single-lane driving (staying in one lane) on motorways.


Provides support for driving long distances or at set speeds in congested traffic and on expressways.

  • Reduces fatigue from operating acceleration and steering on long drives.
  • Reduces fatigue from repeated stopping and starting when stuck in congested traffic and similar scenarios.

Functions on the Outlander PHEV model

  • Maintains a constant following distance according to the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle ahead at a set speed of at least approximately 30 km/h.
    (Also activated at approximately 30 km/h or below, when there is a vehicle ahead.)
  • Stops and then automatically restarts within approximately 30 seconds of stopping1 in congested traffic, according to the movement of the vehicle ahead.
  • Supports steering to keep the vehicle near the center of the lane while driving.
  • Reads speed limit signs and automatically adjusts set speed accordingly.
  • Utilizes navigation map information to automatically adjust vehicle speed to that appropriate for curves, junctions, and other circumstances in the road ahead.

Maintains the same speed set by the driver without pressing the accelerator.

Follow, stop, standby

Follows the vehicle ahead while maintaining the same distance from it. Even when stopped in traffic jams, following will resume if the vehicle ahead begins moving again within 30 seconds².
