World Rally Championship Leaders Tommi Makinen and Seppo Harjanne won the Three-days, 3000km 1996 Safari Rally, held near Nailobi Kenya ,on April 7,driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III. Malinen now lead the drivers' championship by 197 point, while Mitsubishi leads the manufacturers' series by 4 point.

The Finnish pair Dominated the event, regarded as the toughest and longest in the FIA World series stretching their lead to 14m 16s on the final leg with a devastating show of strength and speed in the Team Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III.

Despite the heavy rain which caused the cancellation on the first two competitive section of the pushing final 959km leg. Makinen and Harjanne powered away from their rivals. setting fastest time on the second section of the day - the longest of the event at 214km over the Mau Escarpment - by an incredible 6m 32s over their chief pursuer, Subaru's Knneth Eriksson. With just 88km remaining the rally was won.

A delighted Maliken said of his victory on his first visit to this unique and challenging event " I am very very happy . I knew before the start what I had to do, and everything worked pertetly. The car was so reliable and the team worked so well togather. I had good imformation about the road conditions and everything combined so well. Our win in Sweden and this make a perfect start to the season"

His co-driver. Seppo Harjanne reported : "It was hard work - such a long rally - but we were never under bad pressure because everything worked so well "

Driving the Team Mitsubishi Lancer Dealer Team Lancer Evolution III. Japanese ace and Safari veteran Kenjiro Shinozuka arrived back at Nailobi in sixth position. Despite a brillant performance, mistortune dogged Shinozuka and his co-driver, Pentti Kukkala again on the final day when they lost 15 minutes with a suspention problem on the second competitive section on the final leg " It was a very tough event, but we are pleased to get to the finish with a good result I am very happy for our team and for Tommi and Seppo with a great result, " commented Shinozuka.

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Team Director Andrew Cowan added "This is the one we wanted to win. When you consider our inexperience here and that of Tommi, you can see how good planning, careful manegement and good team work with the engineers, machanics and Michelin tyres can bring success Tommi was brilliant. When we talked to him before the event he responted like never before and did everything he promised, As for the team, we never lost a sigle minute in road penalties in service. And we had a supero supply of imformation from Richard Bums. likka Kiuvimaki and Lasse Lampi who Tommi trusts so much. It was a great team effort."

Makinen and Harjnne now head for Indonesia where they will be jouined in the Team Mitsubishi Ralliart team by Richard Bums and Robert Reld for the third round of the series. which is also the second round of the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championshipn on May 9-12
