1997 Mitsubishi Motors Again Sponsors
15 Lancers for the 1997
Marlboro Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup

For the fourth consecutive year, the Federation of Automobile Sports of China (FASC) has welcomed the support of Mitsubishi Motors for the Marlboro China Zhuhai International Race 1997 through its one-make race, the Marlboro Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup, to be held on November 8 〜 9 in Zhuhai, China.

The Marlboro China Zhuhai International Race 1997 will be held at China's first FIA-approved race circuit in Zhuhai, Guangdong province. It will be broadcast live throughout China by China Central Television (CCTV) along with several local networks, with the qualifying rounds to be held on November 8 and the finals on November 9. This year's event will be divided into eight race categories, of which the Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup is expected to attract particular attention as the only FIA-approved race exclusively for Chinese drivers.

Mitsubishi Motors will sponsor 15 Lancers for the Cup through Ralliart, its wholly owned motor sports subsidiary. These cars are race-specification versions, whose success has been proven in rallies throughout the world. They are fitted with in-line 4-cylinder 1.8-litre DOHC engines which generate a maximum output of 103 kW at 6,000 rpm.

The 15 drivers will be selected from the seven graduating classes of the China Racing School, China's first racing school, which is co-sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors. Marlboro and Ohtsu Tire and Rubber will cooperate with Mitsubishi in supporting this event.

Last year's Marlboro China Zhuhai International Race was a ten-race event which attracted more than 150,000 spectators over two days. The Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup was won by Liu Shi, a Beijing resident with over 12 years of racing experience, including a win at the same event in 1994.

Mitsubishi Motors intends to continue its support of motor sports in China, both through training facilities like the China Racing School, and through competitive events like the Marlboro China Zhuhai International Race.
