Technologies to Improve Recyclability
Regulations related to vehicle recycling are making progress in Japan and Europe and automobile manufacturers are obligated to develop products that take recycling into consideration. MMC is promoting development that actively incorporates 3Rs; Reduce and Reuse as well as Recycling. In particular, based on recycling design guidelines, we are thoroughly committed to the reduction of material types, applications for recycle-friendly materials, increased easiness to dismantle wiring harnesses and motors, recycled material use, and material labeling for segregation; all from the design concept stage.
(1) Easy to Dismantle Wiring Harnesses and Motors
In order to reuse entire end-of-life vehicles as high quality steel raw materials, it is necessary to dismantle the wiring harnesses and motors, which contain a large copper component, in advance. This is because if the vehicle contains a large amount of copper, its value as steel scrap falls and it may become impossible to be reused in the future. We have revised our “Harness Design Guideline” and now take into account the easiness to dismantle the wiring harnesses and motors from the vehicle’s development stage.
(2) Easily recyclable materials
MMC uses easily recyclable thermoplastic resin for almost all interior and exterior plastic parts, including bumpers, radiator grills, instrument panels, etc.
(3) Use of Recycled Materials
MMC is expanding its use of recycled materials based on original concepts and joint development projects with materials and parts suppliers.
Bumpers replaced for repairs at sales companies are made into pellets by resin recycling manufacturers, and then recycled into parts including battery covers, wheelhouse covers, center ducts, filler neck protectors by parts suppliers.
