Compatibility of a self protection and the protection of others

When two vehicles with different frontal structure heights collide with each other in a vehicle-to-vehicle frontal collision, there is the potential for the higher height vehicle to override the lower vehicle. When this occurs, it is difficult for the vehicle structure to absorb the collision energy efficiently.

To address this issue, additional structures under the front side members are adopted for those vehicles with higher front side member heights (e.g. SUV) in order to help engage the front structures of vehicles with lower heights.
