2015 Asia Cross-Country Rally

Two and Four Motor Sports Team again took on the Asia Cross-Country Rally with the OUTLANDER Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) for the third consecutive year. Like in the Dakar Rally, the route changes every year. The 2015 event, which celebrated its 20th running, covered approximately 2,400 km from the start location of Chiang Mai, the ancient capital of Thailand, then heading to Mae Hong Son, which sits close to the border of Myanmar. The route cut through the high-altitude mountainous areas of the north, before returning to Chiang Mai. Takatsugu Aoki took on the challenge as a driver for the third consecutive year, and co-driver duties were entrusted to Wuttichai Thritara of Thailand who already held this role the previous year. Twenty-eight vehicles participated in the car category, and the OUTLANDER PHEV again entered in the Electric Vehicle class.
In contrast to the last two events, the participants were more concerned of the steep up-and-down tracks and potentially muddy conditions. MITSUBISHI MOTORS launched the new OUTLANDER PHEV which had undergone minor changes. Important components of the PHEV system were modified to fit with the requirements of the race, while parts from the mass-produced standard car were used. In addition, the power output of the motor and generator was increased, as was the battery capacity. Benefiting from the expertise accumulated in the development of the LANCER EVOLUTION, the Twin Motor 4WD System featured the S-AWC (Super All-wheel Control) Integrated Vehicle Dynamics Control System. Furthermore, due to the demanding road conditions, the ground clearance was increased, as well as the suspension travel, and large diameter rally specific tires were fitted.
On the first day of the rally, the OUTLANDER PHEV successfully went through the tough, deep river crossings, managing to position itself in 17th place overall. Though, the crew went off the road halfway through a stage, damaging the windshield and dropping back to 25th overall, pulling out of the day’s second half. However, they then encountered fairly flat and dry roads that allowed them to claw their way back to 22nd overall thanks to the quick acceleration and the effectiveness of the S-AWC system. On the fourth and fifth days, they picked up pace over a relatively flat course, recording the third fastest time. When returning to the starting point in Chiang Mai, the crew finished a respectable 20th overall. The MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV had completed the grueling rally and again won the Electric Vehicle class.
The OUTLANDER PHEV crossed the finish line of the race for the third consecutive year since its first entry in 2013, demonstrating its outstanding performance even under harsh road conditions, attesting to its high reliability, durability and handling.
