MITSUBISHI LANCERS DOMINATE THE DAY OF RALLY ARGENTINA

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart driver Tommi Makinen has taken a commanding lead on the first day of the Rally of Argentina, the fifth round of the World Rally Championship.

Finnish driver Makinen battled for the lead from the start of the tough 1,311-kilometre rally, even though he has never contested it before, and blasted ahead as his most dangerous rivals hit trouble on the rocky Argentina roads :"my Lancer Evolution III has been very good. Everything has gone very well and I can accelerate a bit more if I need to!" reported a smiling Makinen when he returned to Cordoba.

Makinen's hopes of taking his third World Championship victory of the season have been aided by a shrewd choice of Michelin tyres. They have proved ideal for conditions that ranged from freezing at the beginning of the morning to almost 20 degrees in the afternoon.

Mitsubishi to concentrate. He has nevertheless set plenty of fast times, especially in the afternoon as he has gained confidence in the car : "I'm learning about the car and aiming for a good result. I'm sure we can move up the order as we gain more experience," said Burns.

"I'm delighted. It's gone very well and our Lancer Evolution IIIs are like new for tomorrow," said Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Director, Andrew Cowan.

Uwe Nittel has taken command of the Group N production car category in his Ralliart Germany Lancer Evolution III, despite fierce opposition from the South American experts : "I'm very plemerica's only World Championship rally this morning. The second leg of the rally includes another 196 kilometres of stages, including the longest of the rally, SS22. Competitors can expect cooler conditions, with a maximum temperature of 17 degrees.
