MITSUBISHI MAKES STRONG FINISH TO RALLY NEW ZEALAND

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution driver Tommi Makinen revived his hopes of a third consecutive World Rally Championship by finishing an excellent third on the Rally New Zealand, the ninth round of the 1998 World Rally Championship, while Yoshihiro Kataoka strengthened his hold on the Asia-Pacific Championship with eighth place in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

The last leg of the rally was the longest and toughest, with no fewer than 182 kilometres of stages, concentrated in the lush farmland close to the west coast at Raglan. After early rain, bright sunshine and a strong wind dried the stages, posing a very different challenge for the drivers. In a thrilling finale, Carlos Sainz beat Toyota team-mate Didier Auriol and fierce competition from Subaru and Ford.

Makinen and fellow Finn Risto Mannisenmaki performed superbly in the final leg of the event to shoot from sixth place to third in just two long stages. It was a spectacular demonstration of Mitsubishi technology and the value of its partnership with Michelin, as conditions were exceptionally slippery at first. "This was a very important result for us. We have scored useful points, the car has gone well and we have some good rallies for us coming soon," said Makinen.

Kataoka and fellow Japanese Satoru Hayashi used their dependable Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution to good effect, triumphing in a close duel with Toyota driver Yoshio Fujimoto to score maximum points on one of the toughest rallies in the world. "I am very, very happy. It has been a very difficult rally with so much bad weather and we were under a lot of pressure. To get this result against such strong opposition is fantastic," stated Kataoka.

British crew Richard Burns and Robert Reid looked to have a good chance of winning, but were unlucky to roll their Mitsubishi Carisma GT on the first stage of the morning. They stormed back to a creditable ninth place. "I'm pleased that we were up there setting good times, but of course I'm disappointed not to get the result the team deserved," said Burns.

"Tommi came here under a lot of pressure with the position in the drivers' championship. His third place was excellent under the circumstances and he was going very quickly at the end. Richard put in a wonderful drive again and could easily have been contesting the lead on the last stage," said Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Director Andrew Cowan.

In the Group N production class, Uruguay's Gustavo Trelles extended his World Championship points lead with a fighting second place in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart is now preparing for the 10th round of the World Rally Championship, the Rally Finland, which Makinen has won for the past four years.
