MITSUBISHI LANCER WINS RALLY OF ARGENTINA FOR THIRD YEAR RUNNING
AND TRIUMPHS IN GROUP N

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart has re-taken the lead of the 1998 World Rally Championship for Manufacturers thanks to Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution driver Tommi Makinen, who took his third successive Rally of Argentina victory and Mitsubishi Carisma GT driver Richard Burns, who took a fine fourth place.

Huge crowds packed the stages around Santa Rosa de Calamuchita, south of Cordoba, to witness a thrilling climax to South America’s only round of the World Rally Championship. On a warm, humid day, mere seconds divided the top drivers as they battled for supremacy, and Carlos Sainz on his Toyota beat Juha Kankkunen - Ford - to take second place by 0.7 seconds.

Makinen and co-driver Risto Mannisenmaki had stamped their authority on the rally by the end of the second leg and the Finns cruised through the final stages in their Lancer Evolution to take their second victory of the season and the 100th win at World Championship level for a Finnish driver.

“I am so pleased to win this rally. It has been very rough and even though we have not had to drive so fast today, it has been hard for the car. This puts us in a good position for the World Championship,” Makinen declared.

Burns, co-driven by Robert Reid, drove superbly to hold off Colin McRae on his Subaru and close the gap on the battle for second place in his ultra-reliable Carisma. Making full use of his Michelin tyres, the British driver was in his element on fast, challenging stages.

“I’m happy to have held off Colin today. I was trying very hard and in the end, he wasn’t that close, so that should help Tommi for the World Rally Championship,” said Burns.

“This was a very good win for Tommi. He was confident before the start and the result is the icing on the cake. The rallies to come are events he enjoys and I think this will allow him to establish himself in the fight for the World Rally Championship,” said Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Team Director Andrew Cowan. “Richard has handled himself very well against more experienced drivers. He never fails to impress.”

Mitsubishi also dominated the Group N production category. Uruguay’s Gustavo Trelles won comfortably, beating the promising Omani driver Hamed al Wahaibi, both driving Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions.

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart’s hectic World Rally Championship campaign takes it to Greece in two weeks’ time for the eighth round, the Acropolis Rally.
