MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTION WINS GROUP N ON ACROPOLIS RALLY

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions have dominated the Group N production category on the Acropolis Rally, the eighth round of the 1998 World Rally Championship, with Uruguay’s Gustavo Trelles leading home Omani star Hamed Al Wahaibi. Team Mitsubishi Ralliart driver Richard Burns was unlucky to retire his Carisma GT when challenging for third place.

The Greek round of the World Rally Championship is widely regarded as the toughest event in Europe, searing heat and stony, unforgiving roads dealing out tremendous punishment to cars and tyres. Despite the conditions, the event came to a thrilling final leg, with Subaru, Toyota, Ford and Mitsubishi in the running for a top placing as the last day of the rally began. Thousands of spectators made their way up narrow, dusty mountain tracks to catch a glimpse of the stages, or simply to wave to the drivers as they passed through tiny villages full of white-washed houses.

Trelles has been Group N World Rally Champion for the past two years with Mitsubishi and knows exactly how hard to push a near-standard car on such rough roads. Co-driven by Argentina’s Martin Christie, he cruised to an impressive class win over Al Wahaibi and Terry Harryman, who put in a brilliant performance in their Lancer Evolution considering that it was only the 10th rally for the Arab driver.

“The Acropolis is always a really tough rally and it is good just to finish. Winning Group N is fantastic. Of course, it helps to drive a car as strong as a Mitsubishi,” stated Trelles.

Burns and fellow Briton Robert Reid were making good use of their Michelin tyres and catching third-placed Juha Kankkunen on Ford when they clipped a rock in a deep rut just two stages from the finish and damaged their Carisma GT’s rear suspension. Unfortunately, it was not possible to risk continuing and they were forced to retire for only the second time in 12 months.

“Obviously I’m disappointed, but it has been an encouraging rally also, as we were leading on the first day. I was just driving in the ruts and I think this shows how rough the Acropolis Rally is,” commented Burns.

“It was a well-proven part, so it must have been a fairly major impact. It was a shame, because Richard was going so well. The boy didn’t deserve that, especially when it looked as though we were going to score a reasonable result,” said Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Director Andrew Cowan.

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart is now preparing for July’s round of the World Rally Championship, the Rally of New Zealand, which Burns won two years ago.
