LEG 12: KIFFA (MAURITANIA) - KAYES (MALI)

DISTANCE: 294 KM
STAGE DISTANCE: 275 KM
STAGE DISTANCE TO FINISH: 1690KM

FONTENAY SECOND FASTEST TO LEAD MITSUBISHI CHALLENGE

IN STRONG SUNSHINE, HIGH TEMPERATURES AND, FOR THE FIRST TIME, HUMIDITY, FRENCH PAIR JEAN-PIERRE FONTENAY AND BRUNO MUSMARRA TOOK THE FAST, PUNISHING LATERITE TRACKS IN THEIR STRIDE TO TAKE SECOND QUICKEST IN THEIR TEAM OFF ROAD EXPRESS MITSUBISHI RALLIART PAJERO PROTOTYPE, CLIMBING TO THIRD PLACE OVERALL, ON TODAY'S 12TH LEG OF THE GRANADA - DAKAR '96, FROM KIFFA, MAURITANIA, TO KAYES, MALI.

TODAY'S LEG FORMED THE FIRST PART OF THE FINAL MARATHON SECTION THIS YEAR AS THE EVENT HEADED OUT OF THE DESERT IN MAURITANIA TO THE LUSH GREENERY OF MALI AND TROPICAL WEST AFRICA, WHICH REQUIRED A COMPLETE CHANGE IN DRIVING STYLE.

SAID FONTENAY: "IT WAS A GOOD RESULT FOR US TODAY, BECAUSE AT 80 KM, WHEN WE PASSED A MOTORBIKE RIDER HE FELL OFF. WE STOPPED AND HELPED HIM, AND THE RIDER STARTED AGAIN. WE CONTINUED AS FAST AS WE COULD. BUT I HAD TO BE CAREFUL WHEN I PASSED OTHER MOTORBIKES; WE TOOK IT WIDE FOR THE NEXT MOTORBIKE, BUT WE HIT A STONE IN THE PROCESS AND HAD A PUNCTURE. SO DESPITE ALL THAT, SECOND FASTEST IS GOOD GOING AND I AM VERY PLEASED."

THE REST OF THE MITSUBISHI T3 TEAM WERE NOT AS FORTUNATE HOWEVER. JAPANESE DRIVER HIROSHI MASUOKA AND HIS GERMAN NAVIGATOR, ANDREAS SCHULZ, WERE GOING WELL IN THEIR TEAM CAR PLAZA MITSUBISHI OIL RALLIART RVR SPACE RUNNER PROTOTYPE, UNTIL THE MET A LOCAL TRUCK COMING THE OTHER WAY ON A NARROW TRACK 170 KM INTO THE STAGE.

MASUOKA EXPLAINED: "THE TRUCK TOOK UP THE WHOLE ROAD, AND I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO BRAKE HARD AND DIVE TO THE RIGHT, INTO THE BUSH. MY CAR HIT A HOLE WHICH BROKE A BALL JOINT."

FORTUNATELY, HIS JAPANESE TEAM MATE, KENJIRO SHINOZUKA, CO-DRIVEN BY FRENCHMAN HENRI MAGNE IN THE TEAM MITSUBISHI OIL RALLIART PAJERO PROTOTYPE, ARRIVED ON THE SCENE MOMENTS LATER, AND HELPED THE SPACE RUNNER CREW TO REPAIR THE CAR, AND BOTH FINISHED THE STAGE. MASUOKA STILL HOLDS A STRONG FIFTH PLACE IN THE GENERAL STANDINGS, DESPITE THE DELAY.

BRUNO SABY ALSO SUFFERED DELAYS FIRST THING THIS MORNING, WHEN HE RETURNED TO THE BIVOUAC ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING THE STAGE WITH FRONT DIFFERENTIAL PROBLEMS IN HIS TEAM PIAA MITSUBISHI RALLIART PAJERO PROTOTYPE. THE TEAM MITSUBISHI RALLIART TECHNICIANS CHANGED THE PART QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY, AND THE UNLUCKY FRENCHMAN, CO-DRIVEN BY DOMINIQUE SERIEYS, RE-ENTERED THE STAGE ALMOST AN HOUR LATE. .../... IN THE T1 CATEGORY, THE CLASS FOR STANDARD VEHICLES, MITSUBISHI PAJEROS STILL HELD THE TOP THREE PLACES HEADED BY JEAN-PIERRE STRUGO AND BRUNO CATARELLI, WHO WERE SECOND FASTEST IN THE CATEGORY TODAY.

STRUGO REVEALED: "I AM VERY HAPPY TODAY, EVERYTHING RAN PERFECTLY, ALTHOUGH YESTERDAY, A STONE PUT A HOLE IN MY RADIATOR, BUT IT'S PERFECT NOW. IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY WIFE, WHO TURNED UP UNEXPECTEDLY AT THE NEGA PASS TO WATCH ME!"

SECOND IN THE CLASS, SPANISH PAIR MIGUEL PRIETO AND JAVIER OLAVE, WERE FASTEST IN T1 TODAY IN THEIR MITSUBISHI PAJERO.PORTUGUESE ALL TERRAIN CHAMPIONS CARLOS SOUZA AND PASCAL LAROQUE HOLD THIRD IN THE SAME MITSUBISHI PAJERO THEY USE IN PORTUGAL, WITH ONLY A FEW REPLACEMENT PARTS.

SAID SOUZA: " I AM ONLY 29 YEARS OLD, AND THIS IS MY FIRST 'DAKAR', SO I AM VERY PLEASED WITH MY POSITION. PRIETO HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL, GIVING ME LOTS OF ADVICE AND INFORMATION."

THE REMAINING COMPETITORS IN THIS YEAR'S EVENT NOW FACE ANOTHER LONG NIGHT WITHOUT THE FULL SUPPORT OF THEIR SERVICE MECHANICS, RELYING SOLELY ON THEIR OWN EFFORTS AND THOSE OF THEIR FELLOW TRUCK COMPETITORS IN THEIR TEAMS.
