"Marlboro Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup" was contested on November 2nd by 15 graduates of the China Racing School, which had received considerable support from Mitsubishi Motors. One of the ten events making up the "Marlboro China Zhuhai International Race 1996", the Cup turned out to be an exciting competition. The Race was held on a newly built official circuit in Zhuhai city, one of the special economic zones in the Peopleユs Republic of China.

The main event of the 10-race series, the Marlboro Endurance GT Race featured touring cars from European and Asian countries. Overall, the race drew an enthusiastic response from the Chinese people, with over 150,000 spectators in attendance, and covered by more than 500 media representatives. The race was also broadcast live to all parts of China by China Central Television (CCTV).

As part of its support for the race, Mitsubishi Motors supplied 15 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.8GTi race cars. The Federation of Automobile Sports of the Peopleユs Republic of China (FASC) agreed to stage the Marlboro Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup for the third consecutive year. The participants in this one-make race were all Chinese drivers, and all were graduates from the Mitsubishi-supported China Racing School.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., the first part of the the 10-lap, 43.4km Cup saw an unexpectedly high level of racing skill from the new drivers, who enthusiastically contested the race from the first corner. Liu Shi, starting from a lowly 6th grid position, was the star of the race. From the start, Liu Shi staged a white-hot battle with the drivers in front of him, eventually winning by more than eight seconds.

Even though it was a prelude to the main event, the Cup drew a spirited response from the large crowd, who cheered the competitors on to the finish.

Liu Shi, a Beijing resident who works as an instructor at the Beijing Peopleユs Police Academy, voiced the ambition to return and win again next year. He said he plans to engage in more racing practice in the interim, and sincerely hopes Mitsubishi will again be as generous with their sponsorship.

In the future, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation intends to both continue their assistance of the China Racing School and to introduce new vehicles to China. Through these and other activities, Mitsubishi hopes to cultivate the skills of Chinese drivers and pass on race management know-how, to enable the Chinese motorsports scene to develop, and the interest of Chinese people in motorsports to grow.

Mitsubishi Motors to provide 15 Lancers for
the Marlboro Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup

-Selected graduates from the Mitsubishi-Co-sponsored
China Racing School to participate-

Since 1994, Mitsubishi Motors has been involved in various activities aimed at promoting and developing motorsports in China, including co-sponsorship of China's first racing school, China Racing School. As part of its continuing support for Chinese motorsports, Mitsubishi will help support the "Marlboro China Zhuhai International Race 1996".

The race will be held at Zhuhai, China on November 1 ~ 2. For the third year in a row, Mitsubishi Motors has made a profound and visible show of support for the event by offering 15 Mitsubishi Lancers through Ralliart, Mitsubishi's wholly owned motor sports subsidiary. The Federation of Automobile Sports of China (FASC), which organizes the Marlboro China Zhuhai International Race 1996, has accepted this support and will again hold a one-make race, the "Marlboro Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup". The 15 drivers will be selected from the five graduating classes of the China Racing School. Marlboro and Ohtsu Tire and Rubber will cooperate with Mitsubishi in supporting this exciting event.

The racing vehicles are race-spec versions of the Mitsubishi Lancer. These cars have been very successful in rallies around the world. The Lancers are fitted with in-line 4-cylinder 1.8-litre DOHC engines which generate maximum output of 103 kW at 6,000 rpm.

The Marlboro Mitsubishi Lancer Challenge Cup, now in its third year, has attracted attention throughout China as the only FIA-approved race for Chinese drivers exclusively. The qualifying on Nov. 1 and the final on Nov. 2 will be telecast throughout the country.

The FIA-approved Marlboro China Zhuhai International Race 96 will be held on a newly built official circuit course in one of China's special economic zones, Zhuhai in Guangdong province. The 4.34 kilometer circuit is the first FIA-approved circuit in China.

At last year's event, the race catergories included the Mitsubishi one-make race, and races for touring cars, GT cars and Formula cars. The event attracted more than 200,000 spectators over two days. Live nationwide broadcasts on China Central TV (CCTV) demonstrated the nation's intense enthusiasm for motorsports. With even more categories than last year, the event is sure to attract an even higher class of drivers and more fans.

Using the China Racing School as a base, Mitsubishi intends to promote and develop motor sports in China through a wide range of activities that include providing racing vehicles, training drivers, and staging races.
