Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution driver Guy Wilks (United Kingdom) dominated the opening day of the Production Car World Rally Championship (PWRC) round of Wales Rally Great Britain, posting fastest time on four of the day’s six stages.

The opening day of the Cardiff-based event was shortened by two stages, when the Hafren test was deemed too treacherous for the crews to drive. Heavy snow and freezing temperatures in the run up to the rally left the organizers of Rally GB with no option but to cut the double use of Hafren, while reducing the length of both Sweet Lamb and Myherin. A trying day for competitors, organizers and spectators alike was capped when the Walters Arena stage was stopped for close to one hour following an accident late in the day.

Rally leader Guy Wilks admitted the day had not been easy. He said: "We knew when we saw how icy the stages were during the recce that this was going to be a really tough event and that’s just what we had today. In some places, the ice has been unbelievable. Trying to slow the car down from top gear on sheet ice is not nice. But we’ve got through and we’re in one piece."

The stages in mid-Wales, a three-hour drive north of the rally’s host city of Cardiff had not been included in the route since 2001. Unfortunately for the crews, they were denied the chance to drive some of the world’s finest rally roads by the tricky conditions. Tomorrow’s stages are further south and reckoned to be free from snow and ice.

Wilks admitted that while Production points would be great, he’s also interested in the British Rally Championship points on offer in Wales. As reigning British champion, Wilks needs to remain where he is to guarantee a successful defense of that title.

Andreas Aigner (Austria) is also on-course for a big celebration with his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. At the start of the rally, only Aigner and Juho Hanninen (Finland) could win the PWRC title. When Hanninen hit trouble early in the day and later retired in Myherin 2, Aigner moved into pole position for his first ever world title. Despite the position, Aigner remained cautious about the days ahead.

"Okay, I am third," he said. "But you know it’s going to be really tough to stay here. The pace of Guy Wilks at the front is really quick and I have to be on the podium to win the championship. It’s big pressure and I need to make sure that I’m fast. The day has been hard and the stages have been a little bit incredible sometimes. The trouble is that we really don’t know where the ice is coming. You come over the crest and it’s full ice in front of you. And then, in the second run through Myherin and the last two stages, we have so much rain it’s just incredible. This is a hard rally! But the Mitsubishi has been very strong all of the time. We haven’t had any problems at all today."

Evgeny Novikov (Russia) was fourth in the PWRC standings after another trouble-free run in his Lancer. Despite never having competed on this event before, the 18-year-old Novikov turned in a consistent and quick performance in his Mitsubishi to stay ahead of some of the faster local drivers.

Mitsubishi drivers Mirco Baldacci (San Marino), Nutahara (Japan) and Bernardo Sousa (Portugal) were comfortably inside the top 10 and well within striking distance of the lead ahead of the second day’s action, which runs closer to the central service park in Swansea.

In the overall standings, Ford’s Jari-Matti Latvala (Finland) leads Sebastien Loeb (France) with Per-Gunnar Andersson (Sweden) in third.
