The 2nd round of the 2007 Asia Pacific Rally Championship held in Northland, New Zealand, was an event with plenty of carnage and crashes but through that came young Hayden Paddon a 20-year old New Zealander who beat the best of the visiting internationals including last years Asia Pacific Rally Champion Cody Crocker.
"It really hasnt sunk in yet, I guess I will wake-up tomorrow and realize it wasnt a dream. I have to thank my team and its great result for our New Zealand Rally Championship hopes, but also great to win an international event. Our next international event will be WRC Rally of New Zealand and after that lets wait and see" said a delighted Paddon at the finish.
In the Asia Pacific Rally Championship veteran driver Brian Green had a good event to finish 5th in the category. "We didnt have a great run in New Caledonia, so its great to get a good finish here in New Zealand. The roads have been very difficult and extremely slippery yet our new car (Mitsubishi Lanver Evo 9) felt fantastic – so easy to drive", said Green at the final service.
Backing up Greens good finish was Patrick Yania from New Caledonia, 7th in APRC. "We came to New Zealand to get more experience and this event is ideal to practice for our new pace note system, the roads are fast and slippery – we didnt as well as the last round but were still 5th in the APRC points.".
Slightly disappointed with his resullt was Naren Kumar who suffered from a variety of problems that put him down the order, however the Team India driver still set top 3 times when things were going well, "I know I could have gone a lot better but we had many problems including a puncture today – and the loss of 4th gear yesterday. On these roads 4th gear is essential and we drifted further and further behind with every stage. Lets hope for better luck In Australia".
The next round will be in Canberra Australia where first round winners the MRF Mitsubishi team return with Jussi Valimaki and Katsu Taguchi, eager to repeat their win in New Caledonia.
