The 2004 Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation was held on June 27th in Shanghai, China, at the Shanghai Circuit. World-renowned movie-star and honorary chairman of Mitsubishi Ralliart China, Jackie Chan (50), enthusiastically established this charity race. Previously, the event took place on the winding streets of Macao; however the event was recently switched to the Shanghai Circuit, a world-class venue which is currently preparing for its inaugural F1 race in September 2004.
Mitsubishi Motors has supported the Jackie Chan Charity Foundation for many years. As in previous years, Mitsubishi provided overall support for the one-make race and gave 15 young Chinese and Asian actresses the opportunity to go behind the wheel. In addition, race day turned out to be a beautiful sunny day with the 30,000 or so grandstand seats quickly filling up. The event was covered live by CCTV, the largest TV broadcaster in China, which brought considerable exposure to the already well-known event.
Popular actor and martial arts icon Jackie Chan rode out on a specially-designed Mitsubishi Eclips convertible sports car and slowly toured the circuit to a cheering crowd. There was considerable excitement as the event got underway. The 15 Mitsubishi Lancers completed five laps around the FIA-approved circuit. Co-driving duties for each of the vehicles were performed by local race-car drivers. The race turned out to be very exciting. In the end it was Korean actress Christy Chung in Car No. 1 who took top honors. Supplementary prizes were given to others drivers who performed outstandingly. The event ended with huge applause from the excited spectators.
The Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation was first established in 1988 by Jackie Chan to aid children living in poverty, and to help the disabled and elderly. The Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation has also contributed to many worthwhile organizations, and sponsors many ongoing activities.
