Recycling Promotion

Today, the world is facing the pressing issue of a society that is based on mass production, mass consumption and mass disposal shifting toward a recycling-oriented paradigm that leaves a much smaller environmental footprint. To achieve this, the world needs to make much more efficient use of resources in manufacturing, recycle used products as much as possible, and recover resources. Efforts to recycle and save resources must be made at every stage of the product lifecycle, from development and production to use and disposal. MMC is pursuing a 3R program (reduce, reuse, recycle) across the product lifecycle of any given vehicle.

Automobiles are global products. MMC is therefore working on global recycling and resource-saving initiatives to comply with laws around the world. The company is also responding to demands that MMC automobiles be easy to dispose of once they have been exported as used cars and come to the end of their lifecycle, or that their disposal has a relatively small environmental impact.

Compliance with ELV legislation in EU

The EU directive relating to ELV recycling*1 came into force in October 2000 and is now on the statute books of most EU member countries. In order to comply with this regulation, Mitsubishi Motors Europe (MME), the local sales and production subsidiary of MMC, has taken leadership to establish an efficient ELV collection and recycling system fitted to the situation in each country, and keeps up with newly joining EU member countries.

Compliance with new ELV directive on recyclability

In the EU, in order to get an approval for a new vehicle model, it is also mandatory to acquire approval for the vehicle's production system (factory, etc.) to fullfill the requirements of this directive, as a precondition to acquire a vehicle model certification by demonstrating that it is at least 95% recyclable.

To comply with this regulation, all MMC vehicles sold in the EU have acquired vehicle type approval, while all of the factories producing them have acquired official production system certification.

Providing dismantling data

In the EU, it is also mandatory to provide disassembly information on new vehicle models to importers and distributors. MMC is participating in the International Dismantling Information System (IDIS), a system jointly established by automakers for disseminating such data on a timely basis.
