Lancer Evolution IX

Launched in March 2005, the Lancer Evolution IX included a new GT trim level that combined the creature comforts of the GSR with the driveline from the RS. Changes over its predecessor included, for improved cooling and aerodynamics, the use of a new front bumper with air ducting, a diffuser-type rear bumper and a carbon-fiber hollow rear spoiler, while some styling changes were also introduced. The Lancer Evolution IX was the first model in the series to be powered by a turbocharged engine using Mitsubishi's MIVEC variable valve timing technology in the intake system and used a titanium-magnesium turbocharger, which resulted in higher torque and produced better response across the full rev range. It retained the aluminum roof panel, Bilstein shock absorbers and Brembo ventilated disc brakes that had proved popular on its predecessor. August 2006 saw the launch of the Lancer Evolution IX MR sporting Eibach coil springs and a turbocharger using a titanium alloy turbine wheel and aluminum alloy compressor wheel that gave improved turbo response.
