Galant Coupe FTO

The Galant Coupe FTO launched in November 1971 was designed to share some of the underpinnings and body of the Colt Galant with its proven track record while creating a full-feature coupe similar to the Galant GTO. FTO derives from the Italian Fresco Tourismo Omologare and signifies a "touring car with a new kind of coupe styling". Its fast/notchback styling solved the issues of poor rearward visibility and restrictions on the trunk opening as well as eliminating the tail dropping look common to fastback coupes. With a windshield rake of 34.5 degrees and side glass with a 50 inch curvature ratio it caught other auto makers off guard with its unique styling. At 1300 mm Galant Coupe FTO offered the widest interior in its class and while being the lowest in overall height it offered the best head clearance. It was powered by a 1378 cc engine with high-lift camshaft giving excellent durability at high revs. On the safety front, the body structure was designed with impact-absorbing front and rear sections for better cabin protection.
