Concept

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) aims to show the possibilities in all-electric racecars featuring advanced electric vehicle and four-wheel drive control technologies through competing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC).

The team’s technical director and chief mechanics, are mainly all engineers from MMC's Development Engineering Office, responsible for maintenance of the racecars during the hill climb event.

They will also be gathering data and knowhow to be fed back into the advance development of MMC’s EV technologies, its S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system and "e-EVOLUTION" — a fusion of electric motor drive and S-AWC system.

Mission Objective

MMC will use two MiEV Evolution III all-electric racecars, which combined the best of its electric vehicle and four-wheel drive control technologies. MMC hopes to take its first victory, in the new Electric Modified Division*1. This will be MMC’s third year to challenge the PPIHC; it previously earned second-place rankings in the Electric Division in 2012 (i-MiEV Evolution) and 2013 (MiEV Evolution II).

Based on the MiEV Evolution II, the new all-electric prototype MiEV Evolution III adds a lighter pipe-frame chassis, powerful electric motor, capacious battery and four-motor electric-powered 4WD. Advances include enhanced motor response, larger tires for greater cornering performance, and a new carbon cowl that further boosts downforce. MMC also enhanced its S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system for heightened traction control and more confident road handling.

Team members are eager to prove their mettle in this world-renowned challenge, which demands expert skill and fearless maneuvering of sharp curves up steep angles in arduous weather conditions.

*1 The EV class now has two divisions from 2014, the Electric Modified Division and Electric Production Division. The EV class previously only had one division until 2013.

Hiroshi Masuoka

Influenced by his father, he was into cars ever since he was a child. After making his off-road racing debut at the age of 18, Hiroshi Masuoka entered his first Dakar Rally in 1987. He later became the first Japanese driver to post consecutive overall victories in the event when he won in 2002 and 2003. Masuoka has competed twice in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, securing second place in the EV class in both 2012 (i-MiEV Evolution) and 2013 (MiEV Evolution II).

Greg Tracy

Six-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champion Greg Tracy placed second overall in motorcycles in 2012. He also brings a wealth of car racing and stunt driving experience to the event, and knows the Pikes Peak course inside and out. In 2013, he competed in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with the MiEV Evolution II finishing in third place in the EV class.

A Word from Hiroshi Masuoka
This is the third Pikes Peak for MMC. The i-MiEV Evolution we entered in 2012 used the motors, battery and many other components from the production i-MiEV model. It was our first Pikes Peak but our second place finish in the Electric Division proved that MMC's electric vehicle technologies were more than capable of withstanding the rigors of the tough world of motor racing. Last year, our second Pikes Peak, we entered the MiEV Evolution II, fitted with many advance development parts, with the objective of feeding back the data and knowhow gained into future production models. MiEV Evolution II also used the S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system, one of MMC's foremost technologies, to realize a major improvement in performance. Unfortunately we just missed victory, finishing second in our division, when a sudden downpour just before our start time prevented us from using slick tires. This year sees our third attempt at this great race and we will be going for victory in the Electric Modified Division. MiEV Evolution III is an improved version of last year's machine and brings significantly better cornering performance after improvements to the motors, aerodynamics and tires. The driver can feel confident about extracting every ounce of the increased performance, thanks to evolutionary development of the S-AWC system. This has resulted in a quantum leap in vehicle stability on winding roads, and I am confident that MiEV Evolution III will demonstrate the full extent of its potential over a course such as Pikes Peak with its 156 corners. Together with Greg Tracy, my teammate from last year, we will be going flat out for victory in the Electric Modified Division. We look forward to your support.

Machine

The MiEV Evolution III racecar leaves last year’s MiEV Evolution II far behind with its high-capacity battery, high-output electric motor and electric powered 4WD consisting of four electric motors. Together, these advances deliver better motive and cornering performance. Improvements include enhanced motor response, a lighter pipe-frame chassis, higher 450 kW motor output (previously 400 kW), tires uprated from 260/650-18 to 330/680-18 to transmit as much all power as possible to the road surface, and a new carbon cowl design that combines with wind-tunnel optimization of the spoiler and other details to boost downforce. MMC also enhanced the S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system for heightened traction control and more confident road handling.

PPIHC

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, an annual automobile and motorcycle race in Colorado, United States, was first run in 1916 and celebrates its 92nd year in 2014. Starting at an elevation of 2,862 m, it takes competitors through 156 corners on a 20 km course to the finish on the 4,301 m summit of Pikes Peak. This elevation difference of 1,439 meters brings significant differences in atmospheric pressure, temperature, weather and other conditions between start and finish. Race week in 2014 begins with Registration and Tech Inspection on Monday, June 23, followed by the PPIHC Sanctioned Practice day on June 24. Then there are three days of practice and qualifying from June 25 to June 27. For practice and qualifying, the course is split into three sections — Bottom, Middle and Upper — with each division being allotted a different section over the three days. Practice runs on the Bottom section also serve as qualifying and the times recorded on that section are used to decide the starting order in each division on the June 29 Race Day.
