The 8th generation GALANT was released in 1996, with the product concept of "high density sport sedan", to revisit "what it takes to be a GALANT". The evolution of the basic functions has been carefully looked after, as the basis for a real sedan car, in areas like improved cabin comfort and safety, and superior balance between performance and comfort. Standard engine offering was "GDI" gasoline engine, with direct fuel injection into the combustion chamber, which significantly reduced CO2 emission, installed for the first time in the world in a mass-production vehicle. This created a new standard for the compact sedan category, that was nimbleness and low fuel consumption coupled with clean emission.
