COLT Safety Test Vehicle
[Exhibited at international meeting for vehicle safety technology (ESV2003) in May 2003]

R&D proceeds with "COLT Safety Test Vehicle" futuristic safety technologies
The Colt test vehicle is equipped with the world-pioneering application ACC, a lane departure warning evolution Lane Keep Assist, a perimeter detection system that can detect pedestrians and bicycles around the vehicle, and a futuristic multi-function information interface "Multi-mode Liquid Crystal Meter". Mitsubishi Motors is proceeding with the development of next-generation practical applications.
1. Preventive Safety Technologies
(1)
ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control)
Laser radar detects the following distance to the preceding vehicle and controls engine output and CVT change gear ratio.

(2)
LKA (Lane Keep Assist)
A CMOS camera detects the lane marking and applies Electronic Power Steering (EPS) thereby reducing driver workload.

(3)
Vehicle Perimeter Detection System
10 short-range obstacle sensors detect pedestrians and obstacles around the vehicle perimeter and the driver is warned.

(4)
Multi-mode Liquid Crystal Meter
This meter switches between displayed contents according to driving conditions and driver inputs and accurately informs the driver of system status.
2. Crash Safety Technology
The most prevalent type of accident that causes death is the frontal impact, while side impacts still account for more than 20%. Conversely, rear impacts account for the largest percentage of personal injuries, necessitating safety improvements for all impact types. Mitsubishi Motors is further enhancing its current occupant protection systems and is tackling the development of safety technologies assuming a wide variety of impact modes like frontal, side, rear, and rollover. Mitsubishi Motors is developing occupant protection systems that function along with each person's physical attributes and intends to incorporate them into future production vehicles.
Multi-stage Driver Side and Passenger Side Air Bag
[Frontal Impact]
Adjusts deployment pressure based on impact level, occupant physical attributes and seating position
Knee Air Bag
[Frontal Impact]
Restrains the lower extremities, moderates occupant movement, and improves protection
Rollover Curtain Air Bag
[Side impact/rollover]
Provides head protection and prevents ejection from the vehicle by maintaining the air bag pressure and tension for a fixed time.
Dual-chamber Side Air Bag
[Side impact]
Provides protection from the shoulders to waist by adjusting the deployment location
Occupant Detection Sensor
[Occupant Physical Attribute Sensing]
Detects the occupant's seating placement and weight and functions along with the restraint system
Pre-crash Seat Cushion
[Frontal impact]
Anticipates an impact and activates a waist restraint plate in advance, improving restraint of the torso
