"i" Concept Test Car |
|
"i" is a full-function concept test car developed around the theme of "small & surprising" combining outstanding comfort and crashworthiness through a new midship engine/rear-drive platform. "i" achieves best in-class, ultra-low fuel consumption, and clean emissions "I" is the first car to rank 5 stars in both the fuel consumption and emissions categories of the ADAC /FIA EcoTest. Factors contributing to its eco-friendly nature include: a high-efficiency powertrain, comprising a new 1.0-liter MIVC engine mated to continuously variable transmission and Mitsubishi Smart Idling System. Extensive use of aluminum and plastic in the body and chassis cuts weight significantly while advanced aerodynamics are incorporated into the body design. The MMC is planning to introduce a small car incorporating the ideas introduced from the "i" concept and adapt them to Japanese market requirements in 2005. MMC has also started to look at phasing in a similar model for some overseas markets soon after.

(1) Design |
|
"i" features a one-motion form that integrates sporty looks with interior comfort. Exploiting the advantages of the mid-engine platform to the full, "i" combines a roomy interior with a cute exterior in a design that wins hearts and brings spontaneous smiles to the faces of all who see it. The design maximizes harmony between styling, packaging and aerodynamic characteristics to achieve a very slippery drag coefficient of just 0.24. The interior marries "light sizing" with "town sizing" - in other words, makes the most of light and space within the dimensions of an urban compact. The light that floods in through the large windows reaches practically every nook and cranny of the interior. Other elements contributing to this sophisticated "festival of light" atmosphere include the black keynote color, a "hovering" dashboard design and seats made of transparent plastic with a green sheen. Occupying the place of honor in the center of the dashboard is Mitsubishi's Information Key system that symbolizes the car's minimalistic and nimble qualities. In addition to its normal ignition key function, the Information Key is used to control in-car entertainment and navigation systems and to store vehicle operating for dealer servicing. Rather than equip the car with traditional features, the Information Key uses a memory stick that enables the owner to share computer or audio-visual data between home and car and to select functions and information as needed. When the driver inserts the key into the ignition, communication starts with on-board instruments and equipment making them operable. This space-saving system let the designers create an interior that is as light and easy on the eye as to the touch.

(2) Packaging |
The new midship engine platform locates the engine under the rear seats, minimizing overhang and realizing class-eclipsing levels for interior roominess and comfort, crashworthiness, ride, and handling in a compact body just larger than that of a Japanese mini-sized passenger car.
(3) Powertrain |
Giving "i" its ultra-low fuel consumption and easy-drive qualities is a high-efficiency powertrain with a new 1.0-liter 3-cylinder MIVEC gasoline engine, featuring the new Mitsubishi Smart Idling System mated to a continuously variable transmission.
(4) Body & chassis |
The body uses an aluminum space-frame, while the front hood, doors, outer panels, rear gate, and other panels are formed from ultra-light plastics. "i" uses McPherson struts and a De Dion axle-Watts link arrangement for its front and rear suspension respectively. The extensive use of aluminum for the suspension members and other chassis components reduces weight as well as running resistance.
(5) Crashworthiness |
"i" realizes high levels of crashworthiness and pedestrian protection thanks to the mid-engine/rear wheel-drive platform that enables a generous impact absorbing space and straight side members which effectively absorb crash energy in a frontal impact. The front hood is also designed with high deformation characteristics to crumple easily as well as provide optimum pedestrian protection.
